Youth ball in the Sixth Ward since 1980.
Who we are
Chackbay Ballpark Inc. is the nonprofit behind Schneider Park, where ball has been played since 1980. It is a community ballpark built and kept going on concessions, registration fees, and the people who show up to do the work.
Every year we bring youth softball to hundreds of local children. Our partner, the Sixth Ward Independent Athletic Club, runs football and cheer.
Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church owns the land. Chackbay Ballpark Inc. operates the park. The field itself is named for Nolan Adams, Sr., who spent 43 years building it and retired in 2023. The Knights of Columbus Council 8743 dedicated it in his honor.
More than a ball field
Our Lady of Prompt Succor holds its family day and its Easter egg hunt on these grounds. Other organizations bring their family days here. Families hold reunions and birthday parties here, and charity events are run from here. Some of it is scheduled a year out and some of it is a phone call the week before, and all of it happens on the same ground the games are played on.
What a ball season teaches, the rest of it teaches too. Children learn what a team is and what it asks of them. Adults learn it again, working the same stand on the same Saturday twenty years running. Friendships start at this park and last for decades. So do partnerships. And people come back here to remember.
Why it is called Schneider Park
The park carries the name of Rev. Fr. Clemens Schneider, Jr., a much-loved pastor at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church and a military veteran. It was dedicated as Schneider Park on May 10, 1970, a thank-you from the parish for what he gave to this community, especially its young people. He died on June 9, 1982.
It is a fitting name. He gave himself to this community and its future, and the park was built to carry that on.
How the park pays for itself
Historically, our concession stand has been our primary means of fundraising, and registration fees cover most of the rest. Between the two, that is very nearly the whole model, and it has kept a full ballpark running since 1980.
The board, the coaches, and the people who open the stand at seven in the morning on a tournament Saturday are doing it for this community, not for a living.
We do get some help. Lafourche Parish pays the park's electric bill and provides the trophies every child receives at the end of the season. The land itself belongs to Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church. We are grateful for all three, and everything beyond them is raised and done by this community.
Our mission
The purpose of this organization is to develop, promote, and administer community spirit, social contact, and economic development by creating a support organization primarily to support recreational activities throughout the Sixth Ward area of Lafourche Parish.

The 1994 sign
A Cajun kid in a straw hat riding an alligator, hand-painted on a wooden board and signed “K.J.D. ’94.” It has been at the park longer than most of the players have been alive.
